The Grand Cru Goldert is sitting on an oolithic limestone east facing hillside, rich in marl and on a gentle slope. It enjoys a relatively later ripening climate and less subject to temperature extremes. The budbreak was here slightly later and this vineyard was somehow protected from the easterly winds (rare in the region). The frost did little damage on these grapes. Muscat d’Alsace (or Muscat petit grain) ripens slowly here, which helps the grape variety to loose its strong varietal character, keeps great acidity and the wine acquires a real ability to age. The Goldert is one of the rare vineyards in Alsace where Muscat has an historical importance. The 2017 took a long time to finish its fermentation and was bottled late in March 2019.
3/2019: yellow bright colour. The nose is finally open and shows intense fruity aromatics, after being closed and tight for almost the entire elevage period. The palate is pure with an obvious limestone signature: slight reduction, tight acidity, ample structure. The finish is long lasting and the acidity is mouth-watering. This wine will most probably shut again before reaching its best drinking time in the distant future. In this case, decanting will help.
