It is always exciting to be able to present a new addition to our portfolio! This little 0.32ha vineyard was acquired in 2010 par Pierre-Emile and left resting for 2 years before being replanted in Riesling in 2013 from our own massal selection at high density (9000 vines/ha). It is located on the full south facing Dudenstein (one of the lieu-dit that composes the Grand Cru). The Sommerberg Grand Cru lies on biotite granite, relatively deep (compared to the Brand) and very steep (ploughings are done with a winch like the Rangen). Its climate is precocious and is, for us, harvest only a few days after the Band. This vineyard was planted with bio-dynamic farming and it makes such a visible difference! The roots explore the soil very vigorously, and even in the previous year, 2018, they didn’t suffer from drought. The yields are low, and with a high density, the number of clusters per vine is at the lowest. We obviously hesitate and were shy to present this wine at that age of vine, but we considered the behaviour of the vines, the very low production and the perfect conditions of 2019 to take the decision to make it the first release. The grapes were very healthy and showed great ripeness. Like most riesling in 2019, the Sommerberg shows an excellent acidity balance. The fermentation was vigorous and the wine finished dry. We are clearly impressed by its potential that confirms the greatness of this beautiful vineyard.
2/2021: clear gold colour. The nose is already very expressive and shows complex fruit aromas (citrus). The wine conveys an immediate sense of ripeness and concentration but the granite geology keeps it well in control. The palate is broad, ample, but remains well focused and almost strict. Ripe tannins and a saline acidity tighten the wine on the finish. Being our first official vintage, it is difficult for us to estimate the potential longevity of this wine, however let’s just say that it should be enough !
