Description of the wine Pinot Gris Roche Calcaire 2023

This wine comes from the Pinot Gris planted between 1990 and 1992 on the Clos Windsbuhl in Hunawihr. The old vines of the Clos are generally harvested a little later, but for the Roche Calcaire cuvée, we prefer not to let the grapes go too far in the ripeness. In 2023, the Hunawihr sector was a little later, but the stony limestone soils of the Windsbuhl allowed a nice evolution of maturity, especially phenolic, without a significant increase in sugar potential. It was important to be able to harvest early enough in 2023 because this grape variety subsequently evolved quickly in this sector. Fermentation was fast enough to result in a dry balance that suits this wine well in this vintage.

Tasting notes

08/2024: Bright pale-yellow colour. Upon opening, the nose reveals aromas of fresh fruits, aromatic plants, thyme, smoke, … This wine is very often closed after bottling, but in the 2023 vintage it expresses a beautiful aromatic palette in its youth. Decanting helps to develop the limestone signature characterized with citrus fruits and a very clear mineral sensation. The palate is clean and precise, it is a dry wine, but which coats the palate with a silky texture. The moderate alcohol, typical of 2023, makes this wine enjoyable. The acidity of the Windsbuhl is found on the finish and brings a beautiful freshness. This wine should evolve towards an even more aromatic profile over time.
