Description of the wine Riesling Grand Cru Wineck Schlossberg 2023

The Grand Cru Wineck-Schlossberg is in the closed valley of Katzenthal. It is a magnificent Grand Cru but unfortunately not really visible from the wine route. One really must enter the village to appreciate its facets: two beautiful hills with a large cirque where the exposure turns from southeast to southwest on steep slopes. The granite terroir is comparable to the neighbouring Brand and Sommerberg vineyards, but more sheltered. This terroir is warmer in summer because it is protected from the winds. We find this characteristic in the power of the wines. The two micas granite (biotite) decomposes and release mineral elements and interesting clay. Despite a poor appearance on the surface, the plunging roots find mineral richness and a satisfactory water reserve. The 2023 vintage will have taken a long time to finish its fermentation, but the final balance is a dry wine.

Tasting notes

01/2025: bright pale-yellow colour. From the opening, this wine expresses an intense and fine aromatic density but with reserve. There are ripe citrus fruits, spices, aromas of medicinal plants (yarrow, etc.) that should intensify over time. The palate is smooth, juicy, salivating, precise, with a verticality carried by a fine and ripe acidity. Like all wines made from Riesling in 2023, the finish is long and delicate. The persistence is mainly built on a fine acidity that coats the palate to leave a sensation of transparency and false lightness. A great wine for the future.
