Description of the wine Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Rangen de Thann Clos-Saint-Urbain 2000 - Vendange Tardive
The gewürztraminer Rangen is located right near the river and always develop some noble rot. The 2000 was harvested very ripe, from a small yield, and should have been almost an SGN…if the yeast would have stopped earlier.
Tasting notes
12/2001 : The fermentation was long but steady and only stopped once the maximum was reached, giving this wine a balance closer to a VT. The sweetness is actually well hidden on the palate, where the powerful smoky peaty aromas dominate through a weighty finish. Again, it is more Rangen than gewürztraminer.
The Clos Saint Urbain, Grand Cru Rangen from Thann
The Rangen de Thann is the most southerly of the Alsace vineyards. In his book « Where Alsace wines ripen », Henry Riegert writes: « from the Middle Ages those wines which ripen on the Rangen hillside figure amongst the most famous growths of the whole vineyard region ». The Grand Cru Rangen de Thann, is situated at the exit of the valley, overlooking the village of Thann with the river Thur passing at the foot of the slope.
