Description of the wine Pinot Gris Roche Calcaire 2014

Limestone soils are favoured for Pinot-Gris; limestone is genetically proficient in forming clay particles rich in trace elements. Pinot-Gris is a variety which has strong ties to the “earth” element and the same can be said for limestone soils, creating a compatible association and balanced expression. Often “flabby” with an unbalanced residual sugar, lacking structure and definition; Pinot-Gris needs a strong terroir and quality plant material ! Pinot-Gris is not as aromatic as other grape varieties from Alsace and thus low yields are essential to assert its character. We only used vineyards of lieu-dit origin for the 2014 vintage of this wine. We could not wait for botrytis development and thus the entire Clos Jebsal vineyard along with selected grapes from the Clos Windsbuhl and Heimbourg vineyards were used for this cuvee. The early harvest date allowed the wine to ferment completely dry.

Tasting notes

09/2016 : Bright yellow/gold colour, quite luminous. Superb smoky toasty nose, typical for this grape on limestone in Alsace (no new oak in our wines, just very long total lees contact). Some light reductive aromas that actually fit the style of dry Pinot-Gris. The palate is rich and creamy, with a velvety texture yet fully dry. It is an easy wine to drink now as there is no unnecessary weight. The finish is nice and round but fully dry. The complex limestone blend brings great acid balance and a certain weight. It should develop very nicely over the next few years.
