Description of the wine Gewurztraminer Roche Calcaire 2014

After having pulled out our ‘younger’ Gewurztraminer vines from Hengst, this wine should have only been made from our little vineyard of Gewurztraminer near the Goldert in Gueberschwihr. However, in 2014, this grape was badly affected by the fruit flies attacks and we had to do severe selections on all our single vineyards. We probably lost as much as 50% of the crop in some places but also feared that the resulting wines would not be at the image of one can expect from a Grand Cru vineyard. So, all our Windsbuhl, Hengst and Goldert vineyards were declassified into this cuvee. The result is of course interesting, and the wine shows unusual structure.

Tasting notes

09/2016 : Bright yellow colour. There is no doubt on the grape variety here, there are plenty of subtle floral and spicy aromatics. Some air will reveal citrus (mandarin skin) aromas. Despite an earlier harvest than usual for these vineyards, the palate shows good weight, medium sweetness, amazingly controlled by a firm acidity, typical of this vintage. Overall, it is an elegant wine with restraint varietal characteristic. Fresh and long finish, very racy and quite easy to use with some specific dishes (smoked meat/fish, spicy food,…).
