Description of the wine Pinot Gris Roche Calcaire 2017

This wine comes exclusively in 2017 from the Pinot-Gris vineyards planted between 1990 and 1992 on the Clos Windsbuhl in Hunawihr. They are producing a very consistent quality, but always remain behind the oldest vines in terms of ultimate quality potential. The smaller 2017 crop, perfectly healthy grapes and good ripeness would have brought this wine as close as possible to the potential and profoundness of the old vines. The grapes ripened quickly, allowing for an earlier harvest and it was therefore easy to avoid excessive power. The fermentation allowed for a very dry style of Pinot-Gris, making this wine arguably one of the most interesting Calcaire Pinot-Gris made on the estate recently.

Tasting notes

03/2019 : Nice intense yellow colour. The nose shows classic smoky varietal aromas, typical light Windsbuhl reduction and with air, a fruitier expression. The palate is vibrant, dry, quite strict but complex and balanced. It is a very precise wine, the way a great dry Pinot Gris should be. Already enjoyable, it will of course develop further in the bottle. With the smaller crop comes also a density on the finish, pushed by a certain tannic concentration. A wine that will make people think twice about this grape.
