Description of the wine Gewurztraminer Roche Calcaire 2018

This wine is made from a combination of various vineyards depending the vintage. We add to the little vineyard of Gewurztraminer located next to the Grand Cru Goldert, the grapes that we declassify from all our other limestone based vineyards (Goldert, Hengst….), mostly on the basis of the age of the vines. Older vineyard are wonderful, but as some vines die (age, diseases,…), a young vine is planted as a replacement. These younger vines are systematically harvested aside and added to this wine. The limestone origin brings better acidity, often a higher ripeness and therefore the wine has a sweeter/richer balance that suits its style. These grapes, originating from our best vineyards, are also harvested much later.

Tasting notes

04/2020 : Clear pale citrus yellow colour. The wine displays very classic citrus aromas (pink grapefruit, exotic fruits…) and a complex spicy character. Delicate palate, nice sweetness, perfectly balanced by the acidity and structure of the wine which is quite amazing. With some time, the wine develops more smoky characteristics. The palate is long, intense and seems to never finish…
