Description of the wine Riesling Roche Roulée 2019
This wine is traditionally produced from the vineyards located on the gravelly valley floor of Turckheim, all around the Herrenweg vineyard. Some parts, nearer Wintzenheim, contain richer deposit of finer silt/loam. Turckheim enjoys very dry, warm and sun-drenched weather conditions, part of the ‘Colmar’ micro-climate, the driest in France. The valley winds tend to push the clouds aside and the distance from the Vosges reduces the shadow effect of the mountains. Gravelly soils are well drained and therefore warm up quickly. They do not contain clay, so have also a limited water retention capacity. All these elements explain why this area is so precocious and depends on regular rainfalls. The wines reflect this precocity by being able to reveal their potential early. They are also a very good representation of the grape variety characteristics. In 2019, the ripening period was ideal for these vineyards. The Riesling grape was harvested in perfect health condition with an ideal balance, allowing it to finish completely dry.
Tasting notes
02/2021: Pale gold colour. The nose shows a classic combination of light citrus fruits and a complex stony/mineral influence, almost unusual for this cuvée. The 2019 vintage shows a remarkable balance and structure on the palate. It will certainly age longer, and with a youthful personality, compared to previous vintages. The mouth is quite concentrated, with a surprising firm acidity that brings salivation and a very clean dry finish.
The Herrenweg of Turckheim
The wines from Herrenweg of Turckheim are always very aromatic, advanced in their development and are always defined by a very ripe acidity and opulent fruit. The wines from Herrenweg are accessible and generous in their youth and although they are often best enjoyed at this stage can surprise 10 or even 20 years later.
