Description of the wine Pinot Noir Heimbourg 2019

This is the only red wine made on the domaine! The Heimbourg vineyard has some interesting characteristics for the production of red wine. The little 0.32ha vineyard of Pinot-Noir is located on the western slope of the oligocene limestone hill side. The slope isn’t as steep and the top soil is deeper, richer in clay and with an iron rich composition, favourable to the ripeness of the tannins of red wines. The vineyard also enjoys the cooler northern wind, which help to keep the grapes healthy but also prevents sugars to climb to high and to rapidly. The vineyard is planted at very high density (+9000/ha) with a low pruning, but the vines are not hedged and therefore the canopy reaches the Alsace classic 7 feet tall. The clusters are destemmed by hand. Fermentation/maceration time last 15 days with little punch down. The wine is racked in 228 litres casks (no new one) and bottled 18 months after harvest without fining nor filtration. A deposit can be expected, so decantation before service is recommended.

Tasting notes

02/2021 : Bright luminous clear ruby red colour. At first the nose can be slightly reductive but very quickly opens up towards beautiful intense red fruits aromas. The palate is elegant, delicate and expressive with a soft velvety expression. The tannins become more present and the wine tightens up showing a firm finish. The ‘drinkability’ and immediate ‘pleasurability’ factors will probably provoke an early consumption! But it will develop nicely. It is a wine worth cellaring for a few years.
