Description of the wine Pinot Gris Roche Calcaire 2020
This wine mainly originates from vineyards planted in the early 1990s on the Clos Windsbuhl. We add, depending on the vintage, selections that may come from other limestone terroirs of the estate. Limestone based soils, with a few exceptions, are certainly the most suitable type for the Pinot family. Pinot-Gris is precocious, ripens quickly, has an excellent acid potential, but which can disappear very quickly at harvest time depending on the climate and terroir. Calcareous soils, which mature later because they are cooler, especially those located in a less hot climate and less sunny location, have the capacity to bring a quality structure on this capricious grape variety. Very sensitive to yield, Pinot-Gris becomes a beautiful mirror of the terroir when planted in high density and producing few grapes. This 2020 Roche Calcaire was harvested very healthy but wanted to retain a small amount of residual sweetness, despite a long fermentation. It is therefore a light demi-sec in style.
Tasting notes
01/2022 : Lemon yellow colour. The nose is full of finesse and still is a little closed. Pinot-Gris is not an aromatic grape variety, so we find in this style of wine an aroma marked by the terroir (citrus fruits) and also the aging on total lees (grilled, toasted, fresh humus, etc.). The attack is delicate and fine. Of medium power, this wine retains its airy lightness because it has a crisp acidity, especially on the finish (it is after all a small Windsbuhl !). The balance is off-dry but the sugars are barely perceptible as the finish is straight and pure.
