Description of the wine Auxerrois Rotenberg 2022
My grandfather Emile Zind loved this vineyard, located on the western slope of the Grand Cru Hengst on a poor rocky red limestone and facing a beautiful forest. It is a peaceful place where the grapes grow slowly. The oldest part of the vineyard was planted in the early 1950s! We did vinify it separately in the past, but always blended it eventually with our classic Pinot-Blanc. In 2021 we decided to keep it aside because it shows all the characteristics of this fantastic vineyards. Yields were very small in 2021 (just the Pinot Gris of the same vineyard!) and the wine fermented dry after a long fermentation and lees ageing.
Tasting notes
1/2023: Bright, pale, yellow colour. The nose is quite incredible at this stage, very open, showing beautiful limestone minerals making it very difficult at all to identify this grape which isn’t very varietal. It is showing the character of the Rotenberg extremely well with hint of waxy beeswax, honey aromatics, light spiciness... The palate is very dry with good acid structure and good length. There is a sense of ripe tannins that bring a very interesting complexity by good skin extraction through our long pressing cycles. Salivating finish and so easy to drink. It will surprise many people and we are so happy that we isolated at last this very special vineyard.
The Rotenberg of Wintzenheim
The Rotenberg is the summit of the hill whose south facing slopes make up the Grand Cru Hengst. The steep slopes of Rotenberg are west facing and look onto the Haut Landsbourg Chateau. The point where the slope turns towards the north is the start of a small lieu-dit called Hinterberg, within the Rotenberg.
