Description of the wine Pinot Blanc 2022
These Auxerrois and Pinot-Blanc vines are planted on the Herrenweg area in Turckheim, near the domaine cellars. The gravelly soils are the result of the different layers left by the glaciers and rivers over the last half million years. On this part of the valley, the soils are very poor in fine element (silt) and therefore more prone to hydric stress. During the recent dry and warm vintages, we were able to see that Pinot-Blanc was a much more heat/drought resistant grape variety. In 2022, these vineyards suffered a lot. Rainfalls were almost non-existent between May and September. Despite a big potential in numbers of clusters, a lot of berries were lost during flowering and the little remaining were not able to grow to full size. We estimate that we probably lost a third if not more of the potential crop. The high proportion of skins versus juice brings an interesting structure to this dry wine.
Tasting notes
01/2024: Pale yellow colour. The nose shows attractive floral aromas combined with some fruits (apricot, white fruit). The palate has a light and delicate structure, quite open and expressive, medium acidity and finishes with a harmonious balance. It is showing very well now after 5 months in the bottle. The small crop allowed for a certain concentration. More pinot blanc than Auxerrois in character, it has a certain tightness and structure and far from the soft style a solar vintage can produce.
