Description of the wine Gewurztraminer Wintzenheim 2003
This wine is made from the usual blend of the young vines from the Hengst vineyard (planted 1979 and 1985) and an old vineyard located near the Herrenweg (planted 1947), that also enjoys very gravely light soils. In 2003, the calcareous part is much more important, because it didn’t sufered from the Easter frost.
Tasting notes
06/2004 : The Wintzenheim is slightly tighter and and less floral than usual. The nose shows more minerality and is still restraint compared to the Herrenweg. The palate feels more voluminous but less elegantly aromatic. The little extra sweetness makes the palate less austere and more enjoyable today.
10/2004 : Much more open today : strong spicy peppery flavours. Nice harmony between a light sweetness and great tannins.
The Hengst Grand Cru of Wintzenheim
The Hengst was first mentioned in the 9th century in an endowment of the Murbach Abbey. The lord of Haut Landsbourg as well as the bailiff of Kaysersberg shared the feudal rights up to the Great Revolution, whilst various noble families, abbeys and the bourgeoisie of Colmar exploited important parcels.
