Description of the wine Gewurztraminer Clos Windsbuhl 2003
What was true for the Riesling and the pinot-gris in this vineyard is also true for the gewürztraminer: the Windsbuhl allowed the grapes to ripen without any stress and helped to keep a good acidity balance. There is no surprise to see that this was the richest gewürztraminer harvested on the estate. Amazing, because there was no noble rot either.
Tasting notes
06/2004 : The nose is the most intense of all gewürztraminers: very earthy, leather, cocoa. Most people would think there is intense noble rot ! The palate is unctuous, round and rich. The good alcohol level and tannins give a lift to the wine helping it to finish with a good energy.
10/2004 : Decadent, intense, SGN like nose. Round, with a long ‘liquoreux’ character (botrytis sweetness). Fantastic length.
10/2013 : In magnum, stunning mineral reductive spicy nose. Strong terroir character. The palate is unctuous, long and finishes with a strict saline texture. The sweetness is still important, but like any other 2003s, it has less influence in the overall impression of the wine. No doubt that such wine do justice to this unusual vintage.
The Clos Windsbuhl of Hunawihr
The altitude of the vineyard coupled with Hunawihr’s tardy climate means that the Clos Windsbuhl is often one of the last of our vineyards to be harvested. This explains the aromatic quality of the Clos’ wines and the consistent balance of acidity, a guarantee of good ageing. Although often harvested late, the Windsbuhl grapes are only rarely botryitized, doubtless due to the altitude of the vineyard, but nevertheless often reach high levels of maturity.
