Description of the wine Riesling Grand Cru Rangen de Thann Clos St Urbain 2000
The Rangen vineyard enjoyed perfect conditions to produce beautiful grapes. Unlike the Pinot Gris in this vineyard, the Riesling developed very little noble rot, but was harvested very ripe.
Tasting notes
12/2001 : The fermentation was highly vigorous and transformed much more sugar than I would have expected at the beginning. The result is a 2000 which is powerful, showing a smoky flinty nose, so typical of its volcanic origin, and a long, rich mouth, not really completely dry, but with no trace of softness thanks to a classic acidity. If I would dream of a Riesling in the Rangen vineyard, it would certainly be the 2000.
The Clos Saint Urbain, Grand Cru Rangen from Thann
The Rangen de Thann is the most southerly of the Alsace vineyards. In his book « Where Alsace wines ripen », Henry Riegert writes: « from the Middle Ages those wines which ripen on the Rangen hillside figure amongst the most famous growths of the whole vineyard region ». The Grand Cru Rangen de Thann, is situated at the exit of the valley, overlooking the village of Thann with the river Thur passing at the foot of the slope.
