Description of the wine Gewurztraminer Roche Calcaire 2023
This wine is produced from a small plot located near the Goldert in Gueberschwihr as well as younger vines harvested on the Grand Cru Hengst and the Clos Windsbuhl. In the 2023 vintage, the harvest was a little later but without significant evolution of sugars, unlike previous vintages, which made it possible to obtain a balanced wine that was quite dry. The influence of the limestone geology on this grape variety is particularly noticeable with a more subtle and less varietal aromatic expression, but above all also with a tighter and stricter texture strongly influenced by significant tannic presence. For this wine, we are just at the limit of the definition of dry wine in Alsace, with a little more residual sugars we should have classified this wine as a off dry wine (demi-sec). When tasting it, this wine clearly expresses itself as a dry wine and this character will strengthen over time.
Tasting notes
09/2024: Bright pale-yellow colour. The nose is expressive and reveals a smoky (tobacco) and spicy (pepper, oregano) aromatic palette, with all the complexity and restraint that limestone geology can bring. We find aromas of flowers and fresh fruits upon aeration, without exaggeration, because we are far from the varietal expression of Gewurztraminer. The wine has a tense structure, with beautiful bitters and a velvety finish. We can really feel the racy influence of the different vineyards that are used here, which make this wine go towards a dry wine direction on the finish, supported by a surprisingly beautiful acidity. Good length and without heaviness, we are in the presence of an attractive wine that can be paired with white meats, poultry, grilled fish, etc.
