Description of the wine Gewurztraminer Roche Calcaire 2024
Limestone geology is currently by far the most suitable for producing Gewurztraminers with a beautiful acidic and tannic structure. With better water potential and often cooler soils, this late-ripening grape variety is better able to develop a structure suitable for aging. This wine is made from selections made on the Hengst and Clos Windsbuhl terroirs. Like many wines in the Roche range, we use the youngest plots, or even the companion plants or parts of plots that we do not want to use in the grand vin. It is therefore a second wine from a great terroir. The Gewurztraminer was harvested late in 2024 and has the characteristics of a late vintage with good acidity and moderate alcohol.
Tasting notes
1/2026: Bright pale yellow color. The nose is expressive and captivating, revealing aromas of ripe fruit (citrus), old rose, a touch of spice but with restraint and complexity, even a welcome touch of austerity. On the palate, the wine is smooth, taut and precise. The acidity is surprising and brings a rare tension to this grape variety. It is a very dry wine with an elegant finish, where the acidity brings a beautiful crystalline freshness. The structure of this wine is almost reminiscent of a Riesling! A wine that will surprise lovers of precise and taut wines.
