Description of the wine Riesling Herrenweg de Turckheim 2017The Herrenweg vineyard is located on the gravelly valley floor made by the river Fecht near Turckheim. The Domaine Zind-Humbrecht cellars are located on the edge of the vineyard. The soil is deep, made of large pebbles, fine sand and silt. Some parts can be slightly covered by decarbonated loess. The name Herrenweg (the men’s road or soldiers) originates from the old romain road that used to link Colmar to the pass in the Vosges mountains. This soil warms up quickly and is very well drained. During warm and dry summers, this characteristic can be a serious problem as the vine need to go deeper to find humidity. Yields must than be adapted in order not to let the vine go into hydric stress. No worries in 2017 though, the frost reduced the crop dramatically. The natural density of the vintage made the wine keep a slightly higher residual sweetness.
Tasting notes3/2019: pale yellow colour. The nose is showing discreet citrus fruit. It opens up with aeration as the long lees contact left a slight – normal – reductive character. The wine is vivacious and elegant on the palate. There is a slight soft feel on the middle palate, but the acidity and structure take quickly control of the wine. Charming wine, showing well young and should evolve gracefully over the next few years.
