Description of the wine Riesling Grand Cru Brand 2017
The Grand Cru Brand is located on a steep granitic hillside overlooking the village of Turckheim. The biotite granite contains here black mica, and therefore is able to produce an interesting clay that will eventually migrate in the deeper cracks of the soil. It will take years for the vine roots to reach these layers (30 years) but once they do, they will find a regular supply of minerals and a more regular water regime. Needless to say that younger vines will suffer more on this por soil. We only plant Riesling on the Brand and at high densities (9000 vines/ha or more) in order to create surface competition and reduce the number of clusters per vine. The Brand enjoys a very dry continental climate (one of the driest in France), with, luckily, more rainfalls in summer than winter. The combination of all these factors will eventually allow the old vines to produce beautiful grapes packed with taste. The fermentation went on for over 12 months in a large old oval oak cask.
Tasting notes
03/2019 : Bright yellow gold colour. Intense nose but clearly still restraint and marked by the long full lees contact. Wet stones, citrus fruit, honeydew…. It does open up with aeration and the generosity and richness of the granite eventually shows up. The palate is broad and rich, concentrated and sapid. The wine shows a beautiful vibrancy and energy. Soft tannins but showing an interesting impact on the finish, bringing a drier mouthfeel. To keep!
The Brand Grand Cru of Turckheim
In the Brand, this variety acquires finesse and elegance (floral and fruit aromas) without ever becoming coarse or too heavy. The Brand always surprises by the precocity of its wines, but whilst expressive young they also have a great ability to age. The nature of this terroir makes it easy to obtain an optimal ripeness whilst retaining a fine acidity
